Ask and you shall receive. With an inbox full of pleads for the next post, I’ve finally decided to give in. I mocked up a post for last month, but unfortunately it sucked, and I really couldn’t have any press like that associated with my image.
So instead… happy mid-July! Turns out moving to another big city and working full-time for the summer is pretty mentally draining and deterring from drafting up some blog posts. But that’s besides the point, it’s time to tune back in.
flipturn dropped back in January, and this June was when I finally felt the need to to catch up. Prior to my North Carolina days, this band was nowhere near my radar. Thanks to my crunchy, granola Frisco roommate, this indie rock group has infiltrated my rotation. I mean to start off, Citrona is basically a no skips EP (granted it’s like six songs long, but still). Highlights that feel like a stream of summer sun through the leaves are “Hippies,” “August,” and a new big addition to my playlist–”Churches.” They truly know how to pick me up out of the bustling city streets and into a back-country, cow-filled pasture.
Now what’s the deal with Burnout Days (flipturn’s big drop from earlier this year) you may ask. It serves as their second major album release ever, following Shadowglow in 2022. Now I could talk about “Sad Disco” and “In Consideration” off Shadowglow for ages, but we can’t keep beating that dead horse. This is a July recap, is it not? About a month ago, I felt this overwhelming desire to escape the city, feel some sunshine on my face, and finally give Burnout Days the full listen it deserved. What a spectacular decision that turned out to be. This is a summer album for a summer escape. I can’t say they’ve ever had a very wintery sound, but this album is outrageously made for the summertime.
My front runner had to be “Moon Rocks.” A few strategic guitar strums, a beat drop here and there, some moments when I thought my headphones might implode–it screams a single.
Breakthrough,
For you
Yeah, you got me.
Next up–and what seems to be a group consensus–has to be “Swim Between Trees”. This line alone sold me:
The day I learned your tune,
I knew I’d never hum another
Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo get enough credit for their metaphors and imagery, but I really don’t think flipturn receives anywhere close to the credit they deserve in that space. This entire song is one great example of their wonderful lyrical capabilities. It’s hard not to get dragged into the picture they’re painting. I guess I should’ve expected this from a band with a name like “flipturn.” Simple. Wonderful.
A few other songs that got pulled onto my playlists are “Inner Wave,” “Sunlight,” and “If It Is.” The latter probably deserves its own paragraph for that hypnotic melody and incredible harmonies, but I’m feeling a bit lazy at the moment.
All in all, I can’t say that this album provided me with my favorite flipturn songs, but there were some solid additions to my playlists. Without this album release, there’s a chance that their music wouldn’t have reemerged into my life. That could’ve meant no more “Glistening” or “Halfway (Acoustic).” And that would’ve been tragic indeed. So I must appreciate Burnout Days for what it’s given me. And you probably should, too. Time to go get lost in my flipturn world.
