It’s as easy as remembering how to ride a bike. It’s as carefree as falling back into old friendships when you’re home for Thanksgiving. It’s as spectacular of an experience as eating a Five Guys’ cheeseburger. It is Gunna WUNNA.
No matter how much time passes, I will always hear a fleeting “It’s easy to slip, don’t want you to fall” and immediately know who and what is blasting out of some JBL speaker miles away. WUNNA: stands for “Wealthy Unapologetic N** Naturally Authentic.” This incredible release was Gunna’s second studio album, dropped in May of 2020 and saving us all from lockdown madness. For many it was Eternal Atake that got them through those times, for me it truly was Gunna WUNNA.
I honestly don’t even know where to begin with this post. I have too much to say. Following Drip Seasons 1, 2, AND 3, we all knew whatever this man touched was destined for glory. With that soothing, deep voice and his chill head-bopping beats, he jumped into the rap game and took over. I could write about Drip Season 3 for days, but that’s not why we’re here today.
I was inspired to touch on Gunna WUNNA simply due to the fact that “WUNNA,” the single, re-blessed my ears recently… sparking a Gunna resurgence into my life. Since then, suddenly my trap rap playlist is basically all Gunna or Gunna features. I truly worry about my Spotify Wrapped this year.
Anyway back to the matter at hand, Gunna started teasing this album in early 2020. He dropped three extraordinary singles, the first being “WUNNA,” which peaked at 57 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. He followed this up with “SKYBOX” and “DOLLAZ ON MY HEAD”–both also getting up there in the charts.
I put Prada on my collar ’cause she proud of what I said
Bar. That’s a bar. The delivery is simply incredible as well. It hits every time I hear it.
Gunna then officially dropped the album on May 22 with features from anyone and everyone. These included Young Thug, Lil Baby, Roddy Ricch, Travis Scott, and more. And if you didn’t think that was enough, two months later he dropped the deluxe version with more songs featuring Uzi, NAV, and Future. What an act of gratuity for the world.
I don’t even know how to highlight just a few songs when I’ve genuinely had an obsession with pretty much every song on the original drop. I guess we can go chronologically with the obsessions…
That intro to “NASTY GIRL / ON CAMERA” is absolutely disgusting. The bass hits and I’m done for. Follow that up immediately by “COOLER THAN A BITCH” and wow. The sample in the background paired with Roddy’s little “ayes” makes this a timeless masterpiece. Pitchfork’s Alphonse Pierre described this album perfectly when he described it as the backtrack of an “elevator ride up to a penthouse.” Like listen to “FAR” and you’ll agree immediately.
Some more spectacular menace-music, so to say, would have to be “MOTW”, “TOP FLOOR”, and shoutout “STREET SWEEPER” off the deluxe.
Lotta orders, dollars, quarters
Wrist water, Rich Porter,
Your b** on now, Gunna Wunna
2020 was an incredible year for rap. Savage Mode II, Eternal Atake, Circles, AND My Turn. Even Pop Smoke and Juice Wrld released from their graves. That landed WUNNA as 19 on the Billboard Top 20 Best Rap Albums of 2020. Was Gunna robbed? Most definitely. But what can ya do?
Since then, he’s had some alright releases like Slime Language 2 and DS4EVER. One of Wun and a Gift & a Curse were also alright. But nothing compares to the times of Gunna WUNNA. So, in summary, Joe Burrow put it nicely when he was asked “Joe, what you listening to right now” and he responded “A lot of old Gunna lately, free Gunna Wunna.”
