Call Him Prince: 21 Savage & His American Dream

It really is “In sickness and in health” for 21 Savage and I. Thank you, Sir Savage, for yanking me out from the depths of my winter cold and giving me a reason to try to breathe through my nostrils again. On Thursday night, 21 Savage dropped his sixth solo studio album, American Dream. Meanwhile, I was in bed before 10 PM recovering from the damn flu. I woke up to glory.

The Oxford dictionary defines the “American Dream” as “the ideal by which equality of opportunity is available to any American, allowing the highest aspirations and goals to be achieved.” I was going to define it as 21 Savage, but honestly he is above the American Dream. He said so himself,

“I don’t go through TSA to get on planes (P****)

You get p**** without head, then you lame (P****).”

What American can just surpass TSA? If you’ve got the money, maybe you can upgrade to pre check. No matter what, you ain’t beating this man.

After long conversation with other women, we as a community have come to the consensus that he gets a “P****” pass. After songs like “Glock In My Lap,” he has already proven that he enjoys saying it for no reason. So we officially give him a pass. Also, by bringing Doja Cat in for “n.h.i.e,” we think she’d agree with us that he deserves it.

Speaking of features, 21 also brought in Travis Scott, Young Thug, Summer Walker, Metro Boomin, Burns Boy, Brent Faiyaz, Mariah the Scientist, and Lil Durk. What a crew.

During the first listen, I had to set my laptop aside and fully immerse myself in “all of me.” HEAVENLY. It’s wild that he opened with such straight heat, but he’s proven that he loves starting strong time and time again. The intro to “redrum” is almost equally as insane, but the real showstopper for me is to follow. As mentioned before, Doja’s colab with 21 might be one of the best things to happen in 2024, and we’re less than two weeks into the year. It throws me back to a classic Hot Pink era, when she would casually drop bangers like “Streets” and “Cyber Sex.” She let us all know she was re-entering the game when she gave us “Paint the Town Red,” and I’m prepared, to say the least.

“pop ur shit,” another solid song, really reminds me of something like “SleezyWorld Go” or something else of the sort. I’ll put my finger on it later, but it’s a nice, disgraceful kind of sound. Needed one of those on the album. The end of “letter to my brudda” to “dangerous” is, in fact, DANGEROUS. Holy crap. That switch up alone got me off the couch and back to productivity.

“née-nah:” overhyped. All I have to say. Maybe it’ll grow on me, but not looking promising. I think I could like the end songs more, but the beginning was just so insane that I haven’t fully processed them yet. I also am just not really a Brent or Summer Walker girl, so those songs just weren’t for me. I suspect that “red sky” and “dark days” may become some solid ones of mine. I already saw TikTok trying to gas up “red sky” and “redrum,” so hopefully they don’t promote the wrong ones, again.

I cannot believe this man will also be releasing a movie on the album. Call him Prince. AND bringing in Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, and Caleb McLaughlin, aka star of “Stranger Things,” 21 knows exactly what he’s doing.

I had too many sentiments off of the first few listens, I knew it had to be recorded somewhere. So here’s lies my first-take on “American Dream.”
